You can regularly spot porpoises in the waters of the Oosterschelde. The porpoise is the most common species of whales along the Dutch coast and is also considered the Dutch dolphin. This is not surprising, as the dolphin and the porpoise are related. The difference between the dolphin and the porpoise? The porpoise is a lot smaller and has a more blunt snout.

You can spot porpoises at several spots in Zeeland. One of these spots is right next to the park. You can see them well from the dike at Colijnsplaat. Have you already spotted them?

Would you like to hear them too?
At the harbour near Zierikzee is a column containing all kinds of technical equipment called Studio Bruinvis. The sounds the porpoises make are picked up using a hydrophone. This hydrophone is suspended under a large buoy in front of the harbour. From the buoy, they are transmitted to the column. At the press of a button, you can hear the sounds emitted by the animals.
